Very sad news. I'll miss Ed for the rest of my days. We spent much good time together on email and at Burke conferences. In 2003, we
even appeared together on a panel (with Rick Coe and Randall Roorda) at an ASLE conference (Association for the Study of Literature and the Environment).

In debate, Ed had a wonderful combination of intensity and good humor that I loved.

Dear Burkelers:

I just learned this morning that Ed Appel passed away earlier this week. Ed's daughter, Beth, contacted Rochelle Gregory (KB Journal associate editor) to let us know. You can read Ed's obituary here:

There was no one more passionate about KB and the Kenneth Burke Society than Ed, as so many of you know. He published more articles in KB Journal than anyone, the most recent just this past fall: "Biological Adumbrations of Drama: Deacon, Burke, Action/Motion, and the Bridge to the 'Symbolic Species'”<http://kbjournal.org/appel-biological-adumbrations> Ed served on the editorial board of KB Journal in one capacity or another since its beginnings. In 2017, the KB Society recognized Ed's contributions with its Distinguished Service Award.<http://kbjournal.org/appel-biological-adumbrations>

Ed was incredibly smart, always thoughtful, cantankerous, with a big heart and the astounding memory of an elephant. His spirit will live on in this list and his legacy in Burke and communication studies more generally will never be forgotten. Here is in 2002 in New Orleans:

Holla! Ed!

Warmly,
