Dear Burkelers:

I just learned this morning that Ed Appel passed away earlier this week.
Ed's daughter, Beth, contacted Rochelle Gregory (*KB Journal *associate
editor) to let us know. You can read Ed's obituary here:

There was no one more passionate about KB and the Kenneth Burke Society
than Ed, as so many of you know. He published more articles in *KB
Journal* than
anyone, the most recent just this past fall: "Biological Adumbrations of
Drama: Deacon, Burke, Action/Motion, and the Bridge to the 'Symbolic
Species'” <http://kbjournal.org/appel-biological-adumbrations> Ed served on
the editorial board of *KB Journal* in one capacity or another since its
beginnings. In 2017, the KB Society recognized Ed's contributions with its
Distinguished Service Award.

Ed was incredibly smart, always thoughtful, cantankerous, with a big heart
and the astounding memory of an elephant. His spirit will live on in this
list and his legacy in Burke and communication studies more generally will
never be forgotten. Here is in 2002 in New Orleans:

Holla! Ed!

Warmly,
Dave Blakesley
