I arranged for Burke to lecture at Oregon State on his birthday in 1983. I asked him what it was like to share a birthday with Marx. He immediately informed me that May 5 is also Kierkegaard's birthday, then joked that it was all providential: Marx explains how ideas come from below, Kierkegaard explains how they come from above, and Burke explains what they do when they get here regardless of where they come from.

He also signed my copy of Towards a Better Life: First, he signed "Kenneth Burke" beneath his name on the title page, then below that he added,   "And I do like the idea that it was on my last birthday, May 5, 1983. K.B." Farther down, he added "Thanks for a great time, K. B."

This prediction was wrong, of course, but why he made it remains a mystery. I wonder if he made the same prediction on other birthdays.
